Makarska is the largest town in Makarska Riviera with more than 13,000 inhabitants. The whole seaboard (from Brela to Gradac) and the whole Riviera is named after it. The town is the winner of numerous tourism awards for urban design and landscaping and for the quality and diversity of catering and tourism services. Makarska is a town that lives off tourism and for tourism, the town of youth, sports and entertainment.

Cultural Summer is a programme with different events, concerts, exhibitions and attractive Fishermen's nights, Kalalarga Night and Summer Carnival which attract a large number of tourists and hosts on Makarska waterfront. Makarska also offers numerous taverns, pubs, pizzerias, coffee bars, pastry shop and everything else needed for a pleasant and relaxing holiday on the sunny shores of the Mediterranean. Fishing and excursion boats, as well as yachts, dock at the pier and waterfront and it is possible to buy freshly caught fish in the early morning hours. On the western part of the harbour are the beacons for fishing boats and yachts and there are fishing and sailing clubs nearby.

In the city centre, close to the waterfront is the largest city square – Andrija Kačić Miošić square- with his statue, which is the work of Ivan Rendić erected in 1890, in the middle of it. Various manifestations take place on the square. On the north side the square is closed by St. Mark’s Church which was built in 1766 and next to it is the rich city marketplace with an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and local products. In the close vicinity there is the Town Gallery of Antun Gojak which always holds interesting exhibitions and you can also visit the Malacological and City Museum .
